Comedy Day: When Laughter is Officially Celebrated

For a long time, laughter has often been seen merely as an escape, light entertainment, or a temporary remedy for the burdens of life. However, with the establishment of Comedy Day, laughter finally receives a rightful place: a moment officially recognized as an important part of our culture and social life. Comedy Day is not just a celebration of jokes. It is an acknowledgment that humor has a significant impact in uniting society, critiquing situations in a warmer way, and also healing. In a world often filled with tension, laughter becomes a healthy pause for both body and soul.

In any part of the world, in any civilization, a sense of humor always spices up life. Funny antics, quips, and sentences that provoke laughter are part of the culture itself. The plays performed, for example, are born from evolving phenomena that color the daily lives and activities of society. Comedy is another way to convey messages intended for the audience. The culture of comedy grows alongside the development of a civilization.

The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, officially designated September 27 as Comedy Day. The inauguration of National Comedy Day this year began with the initiative of the Indonesian Comedy Artists Association (PaSKI) in 2014. PaSKI took more than a decade (11 years) to convince and achieve this inauguration.

The Decree on the Establishment of National Comedy Day was symbolically handed over on September 10, 2025, at the 5th Indonesian Comedy Awards event by the Minister of Culture to Jarwo Kwat (Chairman of PaSKI) and Adjis Doaibu (President of Standupindo). Leading up to the celebration, PaSKI and Standupindo held a National Comedy Day campaign on September 21, 2025. In this campaign, PaSKI collaborated with Standupindo to form a joint committee with the executive chairman: Cak Lontong and the deputy executive chairman: Adjis Doaibu. The campaign was promoted throughout the regions.

“The establishment of Comedy Day is an important milestone for the development of Indonesian comedy, where the art of comedy is an inseparable part of our culture. Hopefully, this establishment of Comedy Day will inspire all of us to continue advancing comedy as part of the nation's civilizational development,” said Minister Fadli.

The official celebration of National Comedy Day will be held on September 27, 2025, at Building A of the Ministry of Culture with the theme Comedy Unites the Nation. This is a commitment from the Ministry of Culture to strengthen the position of comedy as an important part of Indonesian culture. Not only that, this event is held to reach all layers of society, providing a stage for artists across generations, especially for comedians and comic performers.

A lineup of top comedians and comic performers will enliven the event, including Abdel Achrian and Ummi Quary; the General Chair of PASKI, Jarwo Kuat; PASKI's mentor, Agum Gumelar and Tarzan; senior comedian, Aziz “Doa Ibu”; Daus Mini; Ohim; along with the family of Indonesia's comedy maestro, Bing Selamat. There will also be performances from the winner of Stand Up Comedy Indonesia 2014, David Nurbianto, as well as a Total Comedy show from PASKI and StandUpIndo, featuring Parto Patrio, Komeng, Denny Chandra, Derry 4 Sekawan, Asri Welas, Arif Didu, Opie Kumis, Tati Cuek, Mimin Eva, Kang Maman, and TeamLo, a band from Solo that combines music and comedy.

The Director General of Development, Utilization, and Cultural Guidance of the Ministry of Culture, Ahmad Mahendra, also attended this inaugural celebration. He stated that “Today is a new history. This is Comedy Day, a milestone that we must celebrate and make a spirit. We hope that with this establishment, the world of comedy will continue to grow, become more recognized, and comedians will have more opportunities to perform in various occasions,”

The celebration of National Comedy Day is a form of tribute referring to the birthday of the legendary maestro, Bing Slamet. He is known as: a singer: with a distinctive voice and many popular songs from the 1950s to 1970s, a comedian and comedy actor: with clever, fresh humor that greatly influenced the development of Indonesian comedy, and known as a film actor starring in many popular comedy films of his time.

With the designation of September 27 as National Comedy Day, Indonesia now has a special moment to celebrate laughter as part of the nation's identity. This is not just an acknowledgment of the role of comedy in the history of entertainment, but also an affirmation that humor is an important means of maintaining sanity, voicing criticism elegantly, and building solidarity amidst diversity. Comedy Day is a tribute to the comedians who have dedicated their lives to making us smile, as well as an invitation for the next generation to continue the legacy of laughter.
