100 Years of Jam Gadang: The Tick of Time Uniting History, Culture, and the Future

The year 2026 will be a very special moment for the people of Bukittinggi and West Sumatra. The Jam Gadang Tower, a proud icon that has stood firmly in the heart of Bukittinggi since 1926, will celebrate its one-hundredth anniversary. For a century, the chimes of this majestic tower have not only marked the passage of time but have also witnessed various significant events that shaped the history, culture, and identity of the Minangkabau people. The centenary celebration of Jam Gadang will serve as a moment to reflect on this long journey while also looking to the future with optimism.

Jam Gadang was built during the Dutch East Indies government and began construction in 1926. In 2025, this iconic building was designated as a national cultural heritage site by the Ministry of Culture. The tower was a gift from Queen Wilhelmina to H.R. Rookmaaker in appreciation of his contributions. Its construction was designed by local architect Yazid Rajo Mangkuto at a cost of around 3,000 guilders. Since its inception, Jam Gadang has been an important marker for the city located in the highlands of Minangkabau. Its function is not only as a time indicator but also as a record of various historical events and the dynamics of community life. Over time, Jam Gadang has evolved into a symbol of the identity of Bukittinggi, a gathering place for citizens, a center for various cultural activities, and a landmark known widely at both national and international levels.

The uniqueness of Jam Gadang lies not only in its history but also in its unique architectural design. The tower was built without the use of supporting iron or cement like most modern buildings. Instead, a mixture of lime, egg whites, and white sand was used as an adhesive, showcasing the sophistication of construction techniques of its time. Additionally, Jam Gadang has four functional levels, each playing an important role in the tower's mechanism, from the staff room, the clock pendulum area, the main machine room, to the top of the tower where the bell is located. Another uniqueness is seen in the Roman numeral "IIII" for the number four, which differs from the common writing using "IV". These details make Jam Gadang one of the historical buildings with distinctive character and high architectural value.

The journey of Jam Gadang over a century is also reflected in the changes to its physical form. When it was first built, the top of the tower was dome-shaped with a rooster statue believed to symbolize the spirit of waking the community every morning. Over time, the shape of the roof underwent several changes. After Indonesia's independence, the top of the tower was changed to the traditional Minangkabau house's gonjong shape, which can still be seen today. This change was not merely an aesthetic adjustment but a symbol of the transformation of identity from the colonial era to the affirmation of local cultural identity.

Behind its architectural beauty, Jam Gadang also holds stories of the nation's struggle. The tower witnessed the spirit of the people of Bukittinggi in defending Indonesia's independence. Quoting from the book “Youth and Proclamation: “The Youth Movement Realizing the Proclamation and Establishing the RI Government in Bukittinggi” by Masminar Makah and Syahbuddin, one of the most historic events occurred on September 27, 1945, when the Red and White flag was first hoisted at the top of Jam Gadang. Thousands of citizens flocked to the area around the tower to witness the moment. With great courage, the youth climbed to the top of the tower, removed the roof part as a symbol of the end of Japanese rule, and then hoisted the Red and White flag accompanied by the song Indonesia Raya and shouts of independence echoing throughout the city. Since that moment, Jam Gadang has not only become a symbol of Bukittinggi but also a monument of struggle and national pride.

This long historical journey has not stopped. During the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI) from 1958 to 1961, the area around Jam Gadang again became a witness to battles that claimed many victims. This event added layers of history to this building as a silent witness to the various dynamics of the nation's journey.

As it enters its 100th year, the Bukittinggi City Government will hold a grand celebration themed “Jam Gadang, The Heartbeat of the Capital”. This theme reflects the role of Jam Gadang as the center of the city's life pulse for a century, connecting the past, present, and future. The celebration will take place over nearly three weeks, from June 3 to June 21, 2026, and will feature more than 250 delegates from 38 countries. The presence of these international guests shows that Jam Gadang is no longer just a local icon but a cultural symbol with global appeal.

The series of activities organized reflects the spirit of making this commemoration a celebration of knowledge, art, culture, and international friendship. Various international literacy activities will open the commemoration, followed by art performances, cultural exhibitions, photography contests, poetry creation competitions, and various educational programs that highlight the history and cultural heritage of Minangkabau.

The peak of the celebration will take place on June 20, 2026, becoming a historic night with three main event series. First, an International Seminar titled “Strengthening Diplomatic Relations between Indonesia and the Netherlands through the Friendship Bridge of Bukittinggi–Amsterdam”. Featuring the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Fadli Zon and the Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia, this seminar will be an important milestone in rebuilding the historical relationship between Bukittinggi, which was formerly known as Fort de Kock under Dutch rule, and the city of Amsterdam.

This seminar will serve as a space for reflection on the historical relationship that once connected the two nations, while also building closer cultural cooperation in the future. In the evening, the Jam Gadang area will transform into an open cultural stage through the Gadang Cultural Night, featuring a blend of traditional music, Minangkabau dance, and stunning light performances. Under the tower that has stood for a century, the community and guests from various countries will celebrate the living and evolving cultural heritage.

The celebration will conclude with a Traditional Culinary Festival showcasing a variety of Minangkabau specialties from various regions in West Sumatra. Rendang, nasi kapau, lamang tapai, and various traditional snacks will be part of the celebration that showcases the richness of Minangkabau culture through its flavors. The most anticipated moment will be a free breakfast for 20,000 people in the Jam Gadang area as a symbol of gratitude, togetherness, and the community's love for the city icon that has accompanied their journey for a century.

The 100th Anniversary of Jam Gadang is not just a celebration of the age of a building. More than that, this event serves as a reminder that cultural heritage plays an important role in shaping a nation's identity. For a hundred years, Jam Gadang has stood as a marker of time, a witness to history, a symbol of struggle, and a center of community life. Now, amidst the currents of modernization and changing times, the tower remains steadfast as a symbol of the resilience of Minangkabau culture and the spirit of the people of Bukittinggi in preserving their ancestral heritage. A hundred years have passed, but the tick of Jam Gadang will continue to connect the generations of the past, present, and future.
