Reimagining the National Museum of Indonesia, Opening to the Public on October 15, 2024

JAKARTA - The National Museum of Indonesia (MNI) will reopen to the public on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, after being temporarily closed for a year due to a fire disaster. The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbud Ristek), Nadiem Anwar Makarim, emphasized that this reopening is not just a revitalization step, but also an effort to revive the museum as an educational and enjoyable public space.

Nadiem also stated that this reopening is part of an important step in reimagining the national cultural heritage.

The Head of the MNI Unit, Ni Luh Putu Chandra Dewi, said that MNI brings a reimagination concept for several updates. The museum management has added a children's area and various temporary spaces for public activities. In addition, the museum is now equipped with a library, storage and collection management facilities, and a conservation laboratory that is said to be one of the most complete in Southeast Asia. "This conservation laboratory will be one of the best in the Southeast Asian region," she explained.

The inauguration of the reopening of the National Museum of Indonesia by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK), Muhadjir Effendy, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, marks an important milestone in the preservation and development of Indonesia's cultural heritage. The event was attended by various government figures, ambassadors, cultural activists, and community leaders, demonstrating a strong commitment to reviving the role of museums in national education and culture.

The Menko PMK highlighted the important role of Law Number 5 of 2017 on Cultural Advancement in the protection and development of national culture. "This law is in line with President Joko Widodo's mandate, which aims to provide a strategic role for culture in development, as well as strengthen museum management in Indonesia," emphasized Muhadjir Effendy.

In line with Muhadjir, in his speech, Nadiem also emphasized that the idea of reimagination is the foundation of the major transformation applied in this museum. “The National Museum is now present not just to showcase artifacts, but also to transform the way the public interacts with our history and culture,” he stated.

In addition to physical improvements, the reimagination concept promoted by the Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA) focuses on curatorial development, enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of infrastructure, and developing the professionalism of human resources managing the museum. The main goal of this reimagination is to make the National Museum of Indonesia a source of knowledge and inspiration that is relevant to the wider community.

After the inauguration, the Menko PMK and the Minister of Education and Culture, along with their entourage, took a tour of the museum to explore new exhibitions that integrate multimedia technology with interactive historical narratives. Among the new spaces that attracted attention is the Immersive Room A, which features visual and audio technology to bring Indonesian history to life, as well as the MNI Future Room that explores the role of museums in the future.

This reopening is also marked by the Repatriation Exhibition, which showcases 760 historical items successfully returned from the Netherlands over a period of two years (2023–2024). This exhibition features collections of historical artifacts, such as the collection of Prince Diponegoro, the Singhasari statue, and the Pita Maha art from Bali.

"With the reimagination efforts continuing for the next three years, it is hoped that the National Museum of Indonesia can become a model for international standard museum management," explained the Acting Head of the Indonesian Heritage Agency, Ahmad Mahendra.

With the reimagination concept, MNI is expected to continue to be a relevant space for the younger generation, as well as an education and recreation center for the wider community.[*]
