Celebrating the Intellectual Heritage of the Archipelago in the 400th Year of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari

The commemoration of the 400th year of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari serves as a historic moment that provides a space for reflection on the relevance of the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Archipelago. He is not only known as a scholar but also as a thinker, fighter, and figure whose influence transcends the Archipelago to the international arena.

As an important figure in the history of Islam in the Archipelago, Sheikh Yusuf demonstrated how the values of Islam, culture, and struggle can be integrated holistically. His legacy has not only impacted Indonesia but also abroad, particularly in South Africa, where he is recognized as a rare figure celebrated as a hero in both Indonesia and South Africa.

This recognition is further strengthened at the global level when UNESCO, through its 43rd General Conference, designated the 400th Anniversary of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari as a UNESCO Anniversary 2026. This was announced by the Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, during the commemoration event held in the Old Banten area, Serang City, Banten. This designation is not merely a ceremony but a form of global acknowledgment of Sheikh Yusuf's role and thoughts as a scholar, fighter, and peace figure from the Archipelago. This moment emphasizes that the intellectual heritage born from Indonesia has a tangible contribution to building universal human values such as tolerance, justice, and inclusive spirituality.

One of the main activities in this commemoration is Khatmul Quran Bil Kitaba, a spiritual practice through the writing of the Quran. This activity emphasizes that the tradition of literacy in Islam is not limited to reading but also includes writing. Additionally, a discussion titled “Sheikh Yusuf Then, Now, and Later” serves as a dialogue space that presents a critical reading of his thoughts. This discussion not only places Sheikh Yusuf in a historical context but also as an ethical and intellectual reference in responding to contemporary and future dynamics.

An exhibition of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari's manuscripts is also presented to invite the public to see firsthand how his ideas, writings, and struggles have been documented and passed down through generations.

In his speech, Undri, as the Secretary of the Directorate General of Diplomacy, Promotion, and Cultural Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and the event's organizing chairman, emphasized that this commemoration is a form of national respect for a great figure of the nation. “This event is held as a form of respect from the state for one of the great figures, a scholar, thinker, and fighter whose thoughts have influenced not only at the national level but also internationally,” he stated.

Furthermore, this commemoration also has strategic objectives, namely to introduce the civilization of Islam in the Archipelago to a broader public, strengthen historical literacy among the community, and enhance Indonesia's relations with other countries, particularly South Africa, which has historical ties to Sheikh Yusuf's journey.

The 400th anniversary of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari serves as a reminder that Indonesia has an intellectual heritage that is not only locally valuable but also has global resonance.
