The Pulse of National Culture: Reflection on One Year of the Ministry of Culture's Journey

One year ago, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia officially stood as an independent entity. A glimmer of hope shone brightly in the hearts of cultural practitioners. The Ministry of Culture is not just a change in nomenclature.

           It is a promise, a reaffirmation from the state that culture is not an accessory, but the main foundation that shapes the soul and character of this nation. Now, after 365 days have passed, that promise is beginning to take shape. This journey has indeed just begun, but its pulse is already felt strongly, from the corridors of museums to the community stages in the corners of the country.

Preserving the Past, Shaping the Future

           One of the most fundamental things felt is how the state views support for cultural actors. Through the Cultural Endowment Fund or Dana Indonesiana, the paradigm of "aid" has shifted to "investment." Access to funding has become more open and democratic.

           Art groups in traditional villages, whose works were once only for local consumption, can now document their heritage in digital format. Elder maestros whose knowledge is at risk of extinction now have the resources to regenerate. The Dana Indonesiana has become the fuel that ignites thousands of small flames of creativity across the archipelago, ensuring that culture continues to live and remain relevant.

           The revitalization program for cultural heritage and museums promoted over the past year is not just about polishing old buildings. Through this program, there is an effort to revive the dialogue between the current generation and its past. When a museum is revitalized, the goal is for every corner to tell a story to a young person who comes with their gadget, making history no longer distant.

           At the same time, the echo of national pride feels so strong through efforts to repatriate cultural artifacts. The return of the nation's heirlooms from various countries around the world is not just about returning inanimate objects. It is about restoring pieces of our collective memory. A reaffirmation of Indonesia's cultural sovereignty in the eyes of the world.

           The Ministry of Culture also ensures that the cultural wealth of the archipelago is not just stored in glass cabinets but can be accessed by anyone, anywhere. The digitization program of ancient manuscripts transforms fragile lontar sheets into eternal data.

           The virtual museum tour project allows a student at the edge of the country to explore the collections of the National Museum in Jakarta without having to leave their classroom. A visionary perspective from the Ministry of Culture in translating preservation in the digital era. Ensuring that the noble heritage of ancestors does not fade with time and can engage in dialogue with the new generation.

A Beginning of a Journey

           One year is the first step of a long marathon. The Ministry of Culture has successfully set its compass in the right direction by making the community the main subject of cultural advancement. This journey is not just the government's task, but a call for us, the nation's cultural preservers, to continue to interpret and internalize cultural values in everyday life.

           The challenges ahead are still many, ranging from equitable cultural infrastructure to improving cultural literacy among the public. However, looking at the foundation that has been laid over the past year, cultural practitioners deserve to celebrate. Culture is no longer a trivial matter, but has transformed into soft power for Indonesia in shaping its human character while asserting its existence in the world civilization.
